"To the Staff at Spring Valley:
My time here has been a learning and great experience for me. I have met a lot of wonderful people who have not only become my friends, but a part of my family. Even on my worst days where you think that there is no way out of a terrible situation, the family here kept me strong and made me realize that there is always hope under any circumstance.
I will miss everyone here at Spring Valley!  God bless everyone here at Spring Valley!"

Christian Community Action of Porter County
About CCA

CCA started as an outreach by a collection of church families rallying to assist a women who was being released from Westville Institution in the early 1960's. The families worked together to help the chronically, mentally ill woman reacclimate herself into society. The realization that many other women were leaving institutionalized care and in need of the same assistance lead to the acquisition of and start of Greenwich House.

44-years ago, Christian Community Action of Porter County became an agency to serve these women in need.

In the late 80's, the agency and it supporters saw an increased need to help families who were dealing with homelessness. Families have a uniquely underserved position in the homeless community, which had traditionally been served by shelters that were merely places for someone to sleep for the night. The agency moved into the former Spring Valley Motel - hence the name Spring Valley Shelter - in 1990. The facility provided a single room and bath for a family to call home. More importantly, though, SVS provided counseling, case management and classes to help the clients build a better foundation for a brighter future through education, planning and healing.

In 2006, Spring Valley moved into its current location, a 28-apartment complex which provides families their own apartment for a more comfortable living arrangement while they rebuild their lives, families and futures.

In the late 90's, CCA was tasked with running an Emergency Assistance program with funding from the United Way. The program provides a family facing an unplanned financial hardship with monetary support with the hope it will allow them to get through the tough time and not lose their home.

As we look to our future, we are looking to strategically partner with other agencies and community organizations to look at ways to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, explore new ways to assist those who suffer from chronic mental illness as well as their families and look for ways to positively impact our community through the development of new programs to meet current and future needs.
